Lead poisoning has been identified as the number one environmental health threat to children in the United States and high blood lead levels have been associated with reading disabilities, problems with attention and motor coordination, and behavioral problems.

Deteriorating lead-based paint in older buildings is the major cause of lead poisoning in children, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control, disproportionately affects poor and minority people living in large metropolitan areas and living in older housing. Lead can also negatively affect adults and can sometimes be found in drinking water because of the presence of lead pipes, in some dishware and crystal, at some workplaces and in other locations.
